For road bikers, Gran Canaria probably is the most suitable of the Canary Islands. It is one of the largest of the islands and there are many roads with little traffic. It is possible to cycle from the sea on all sides of the island to the highest point (Pico de las Nieves, 1939 meters). The coastal region is not that exciting but inland, especially in the south-west half of the island, there are impressive, rugged mountains, while the highest part of the island is forested. The island has a favorable climate, warm and fairly dry all year round. Road surface conditions vary between extremes. The asphalt is often excellent but also frequently miserable.
