This ride through the Turtmanntal is, so far (2025), my favourite among the climbs I have biked in the Valais. In this valley there are fewer tourists than elsewhere, the road is often narrow and the asphalt is largely excellent. In addition, the landscape is magnificent. In the first 8 plus kilometres the cyclist can enjoy wide views of the deep Rhône valley and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland beyond. Because the road winds uphill in many zigzags, in a straight line little progress is made in this section. The gradient lies mostly at 8%. After this opening section, the road runs relatively straight towards the very end of the climb, in a southerly direction through the valley, at first mainly through a beautiful forest, where the road is narrow and the rushing stream comes ever closer. After the steepest passage of the ride (one kilometre at 9.7%) there are still 6 kilometres to go to the end of the ascent, now on a road that is not really steep (1–5%). The valley is wider then before, the landscape more open and there are initially still some buildings. The last kilometre and a half is the most beautiful of the entire route, thanks to the sudden view of the mountains at the end of the valley and of a glacier (Turtmanngletschär).
