The ascent to the Belchen from the Münstertal is long (24 kilometers) and varied. Thanks to a descent halfway, this is the climb with the largest number of elevation meters (1114) in the Black Forest. The trip consists of four parts. It begins at the fork of the L123 and the L130 in Untermünstertal. The first six and a half kilometers through the Münstertal are easy. They start with an inclination of just 2%. By and by, the slope then increases to 6%. Remarkable is a large former monastery (St. Trudpert) on the right side of the street. At the junction towards Schauinsland lies the beginning of the second part, which ends at the Wiedener Eck. I drove this part using only the middle chainring. Nowhere does the slope exceed 6%. At the Wiedener Eck we turn right. On the next two kilometers the slope remains 6% but after that it diminishes. At Hohtannhütte (1180 m) a descent starts, leading to a loss of 130 elevation meters. At a bifurcation we turn to the right towards the Belchen (1414 m) and begin the final part of the ascent with the steepest kilometer of the entire trip (8.3%). At the parking lot of the Belchenbahn we keep to the right and take the unpaved road, which after 200 meters changes back again into a wide asphalted road. This part is pretty boring at first but is becoming more interesting towards the end. First we cross the cableway and then the summit of the Belchen and the Belchenhaus (1360 m) become visible. Our trip ends at the Belchenhaus. Under favorable conditions you will have a breathtaking view across the Black Forest, of the Vosges, the Jura and the Swiss Alps.
