The climb to Dünser Älpele from the Ill valley consists of two parts. Part one (9.9 kilometres long) runs from Schlins to Furtsch, part two (4.9 kilometres) from Furtsch to Dünser Älpele. It is a scenic ride on an often narrow road. The trip itself takes place at some distance from the high mountains, but offers many views of high peaks, especially those of the Rätikon further south. When I cycled here for the first time, these views were blurred considerably, according to the Austrian weather services by dust originating from the Sahara (see some of my photos). The first part of the climb has several variations. I chose to start in Schlins and cycle towards Furtsch via Röns, Düns and Bassigg. The steepest sections of the first part lie between Schlins and Röns (250 metres at 13%), and before and in Bassigg (two kilometres at 8-12%). Overall, however, the second part of the ascent, after Furtsch, is clearly tougher than the part before Furtsch (9.1 versus 6.4%). Also views are scarcer because the route mostly passes through forests. The road surface becomes quite bad halfway the second part, from the point where the road turns almost 180 degrees to head east. At the destination of the climb there is a restaurant with a terrace and a high ORF (Österreichischer Rundfunk) transmission tower.
