Profile Dünser Älpele-northwest

The climb from Rankweil to Dünser Älpele is much less beautiful than the climb to the same destination from the Ill valley. This is due to the first six kilometres between Rankweil and Übersaxen. Here the road is wide and runs mostly through the forest, so rewarding views are missing. Two kilometers after the start, the road becomes steep and this does not change for the next 4.5 kilometers, until shortly after Übersaxen (average 8.9%). After that, the ride gets more pleasant, as the narrow, winding road leads through a beautiful forest. For three kilometers cycling is also easier (between -1 and 5%). Then, the last kilometre before Furtsch is a bit harder (7-8%) again. In Furtsch this climb merges with the climb from the other direction to cover the last five kilometres together. These have a slope of 9.1%, on average, so it is hard work. Views are scarcer here than before because the route mostly passes through forests. Halfway between Furtsch and the top of the climb, at the point where the road turns almost 180 degrees to head east, the road surface that has been excellent up to that point becomes quite bad. This "bend" also contains the steepest 250 metres of the ride (13%). At the destination of the climb there is a restaurant with a terrace and a high ORF (Österreichischer Rundfunk) transmission tower.
