On this webpage the climb to the Rifugio Forni begins in Bormio. As a result, the first 12 kilometers of the ride ending in Santa Catarina are not so interesting. During this part of the ride one cycles more or less straight ahead on a wide, somewhat busy road, whose gradient fluctuates between -2 and 9%. In Santa Catarina we turn left and the character of the road changes radically. Though the first 2 kilometers after the junction are almost horizontal, the following and last 4 kilometers ending at the hut (rifugio in Italian) are steep on average (9.9%) but also include some sections that significantly exceed the 10 percent mark. This final ramp starts with a kilometer at 13.3%, whose steepest 250-meter segment has a gradient of 16%. After that the ascent is not too hard for a little less than a kilometer. The last 2 kilometers include three more passages demanding the ultimate effort from most cyclists. The last two of these contain 250 meter segments of 15 and 16%, respectively. Finally, over the last few hundred meters the road initially runs 4 meters downhill and then continues unpaved upwards to the hut. There you have a superb view of the Ghiacciaio (glacier) dei Forni below the summit of the Punta San Matteo (3678 m).
