On this website the ascent to the Vallon de Champagny le Haut begins in Moûtiers. However, I could also have taken Bozel as the starting point because in the first 12.5 kilometers between Moûtiers and Bozel the road is busy with mostly fast traffic and because relatively little altitude is gained (367 meters). After Bozel the road becomes much quieter and considerably steeper. Champagny-en-Vanoise is situated 5 kilometers further along the route and is reached from Bozel on a somewhat boring road with a gradient of mostly 7-8%. After Champagny the ride becomes more interesting. The valley narrows to become a gorge, in which the road traverses a sheer mountain face of beautiful rock. This passage harbours the steepest kilometer of the climb (9.3%). After that the valley becomes much wider. The remaining 5 kilometers have a gradient between 1 and 6% so one may fully enjoy the high alpine surroundings.
