The elevation gain (1080 metres) that has to be overcome on this ascent from Villargondran to the Col du Mollard is certainly substantial, but climbing is relatively easy. Over the first 12 kilometres to Albiez-le-Jeune, almost 800 metres of elevation are gained, mostly on a steep mountainside, but thanks to numerous hairpin bends the gradient measures almost continuously 7%, which is quite pleasant. This long opening section runs almost entirely through forest. After Albiez-le-Jeune, the road to Albiez-le-Vieux mostly undulates gently, now with many views. In the direction of cycling, the eye is drawn to the Aiguilles d’Arves, three sharp, pointed peaks (3510 metres). After Albiez-le-Vieux, there are still one and a half kilometres to go to the Mollard; these include the steepest kilometre of the entire route (8.3%). The route has little traffic.
