The Schauinsland (1284 m) is situated just south of the city of Freiburg. It can be reached by funicular or by driving up the Schauinslandstrasse. The climb begins almost in the city center and is therefore very popular among road bikers. Here, once a year, Germany's biggest mountain time trial takes place, the Schauinslandkönig. The ride starts at the foot of the Johanneskirche. The first six kilometer till Bohrer head almost straight south and form a warming up (0-5%). From Bohrer the wide road climbs up in ample hairpin bends through the forest The first kilometer is the steepest one (9%). During the remaining eleven kilometers the slope is fairly constant. Until the junction to Gießhübel the slope is around 7%; after the junction, it is 5-6% for the 500 meter intervals. The highest point of the road lies at an elevation of 1200 meters. On a clear day the Schauinsland offers a magnificent view of the Black Forest, the Vosges, the Swiss Alps and the city of Freiburg 900 meters below the summit. For those who love it: the descent is magnificent.
