Like many other climbs in the Black Forest,
this ride from the Simonswäldertal to Alte Eck
shows a characteristic scenic sequence:
first a valley with some houses, farmhouses and meadows,
then forest, and finally an open landscape
with scattered buildings and an expansive view.
However, among all those climbs,
this one ranks among the most beautiful.
There are relatively many pleasant open sections,
even in the forested part.
The ascent is, in total, not really hard,
but the gradient varies considerably,
with a few strong upward outliers, so some parts are challenging.
After the start in the hamlet of Bei der Kirche
(a part of Obersimonswald),
the road leads eastwards through a beautiful valley,
initially at a gradient of 4–6%
and later steeper,
including the steepest kilometre of the entire climb (10.8%).
Just over two kilometres further on, the route turns sharply right
at a fork in the road
and a section of about 100 metres without asphalt must be overcome.
Soon after, a descent follows,
in which 50 metres of elevation are lost,
ending at the Kilpenbach.
This is followed by a steep passage, with
a stretch of 250 metres at 13%.
Shortly afterwards one turns left at a junction
and another 2 kilometres remain until
Alte Eck is reached (6–9%).
