The Malta Hochalmstraße begins in Gmünd, but since the first 15 kilometers up to the toll station only gain 180 meters in elevation, the start of the climb on this website is set at the toll station. Tip: from Gmünd to the toll station, take the beautiful, fully paved cycle path along the river Malta instead of the main road. The climb from the toll station to the Kölnbreinsperre, the highest dam in Austria (200 meters), consists of three steep sections, separated by two easier stretches. The first two kilometers after the toll station are steep (9–10%). After a section with mostly gentle gradients, you have to push hard on the pedals after passing the Gmünder Hütte. The next 3–4 km have a gradient of 9–10%. After that, two kilometers allow for some recovery before hard work is required again in the final more than 3 kilometers at a gradient of 8–9%. The many tunnels (six during the ascent, five on the descent) are an experience in themselves. Two of them are not lit, including the longest one (over 500 meters). So make sure to bring good lighting yourself. The dam impresses with its height, width (626 meters), and the surrounding mountain landscape.
