Though the Col de la Schlucht will be considered by many cyclists as a rewarding goal in itself (335 climb effort points and 689 elevation meters), we present it here as a part of the climb towards the Hohneck. The climax, literally and figuratively, of the whole trip is the final jump from the Route des Crêtes to the top of the Hohneck, a narrow road with a wavy pavement going up in 7 hairpin bends and steepening to some 12% at the end. The panorama from the summit may be superb if the atmosphere is clear. Contrary to this exciting finish, the first 15 kilometers from Stosswihr to the Col de la Schlucht are rather boring. One gear would be enough with the slope always 4 or 5 %. Due to the forest, views are rare and especially during weekends there may be much traffic on the road. After the col, continue a few hundred meters towards Gérardmer and then turn left onto the Route des Crêtes. During another 1.5 kilometers some 100 elevation meters are gained (6%) followed by a quasi horizontal stretch of some 2 kilometers and finally by the steep end jump.
