This is a great pass for climbers. Overall, the ascent overcomes 1257 elevation meters, the road is steep with an average gradient of 9.6% for the last ten kilometers, the route contains 34 hairpin bends and has less traffic than the parallel and slightly more northern located Passo Falzàrego. In addition, the mountains are superbly beautiful. This especially holds for the Averau (2649 m) and the Nuvolau (2575 m), both lying north of the road. From the pass itself the most impressive massifs are those of the Tofane (3244 m) in the north and the Monte Cristallo (3221 m) in the northeast. The ride starts just south of Caprile taking the SP20 towards Selva di Cadore. During the first, not really steep part (3-8%) the road runs in a valley through three unlit tunnels. So, bring some light! Then the road turns left and winds itself by means of five hairpin bends upwards to Selva di Cadore. In Selva begins a short descent (18 elevation meters) followed by the last ten kilometers of the trip, which are all steep. The steepest of these kilometers (11.8%) is just at the beginning. When reaching the tree line one can see, ahead and far above the road, a big building. This is the Rifugio Averau. Luckily we do not have to go that far up because from the Rifugio Fedare the road continues towards the east, that is, we turn right for the last 250 elevation meters.
