Plan d'Amont

Profile Plan d'Amont

The climb from Modane to the Plan d’Amont (a reservoir) consists of two parts. The first is the ride from Modane to Aussois via the D215. I found this section rather dull, with few bends. The gradient varies considerably, between 3 and 9%. The immediate surroundings of the road are sparsely wooded, so there are plenty of views of the Arc valley and the mountains beyond. The second part of the climb begins in Aussois at the junction towards the “Plan d’Amont Barrages” and appealed to me much more than the first part. After the car park of the chairlift station, the road becomes narrower and winds upwards through the forest with many bends. Here the climb is wonderfully steep, with a 5-kilometre section at an average gradient of 9.4%. This section ends at a viewpoint with a car park, after which the climb continues along the lower of the two reservoirs (Plan d’Aval) and, half a kilometre further on, turns right onto a steep one-way road. The ride ends after another 200 metres at the start of “P3”. The short continuation to the Plan d’Amont is unpaved (in 2025).
