The Col du Chaussy is one of those small passes, typical for France, that connect only a few villages on either side of the pass. As a result, there is hardly any traffic on the road, which makes the climb a real pleasure for cyclists. As an additional plus, there is a terrace at the pass. The “north approach” described here follows an almost semicircular route. First one rides in a north-easterly direction on the road towards the Col de la Madeleine, then roughly eastwards past the small village of Montaimont to the next village, Bonvillard, and finally southwards up to the pass. Along the way there are views of imposing mountain massifs. From a sporting point of view, the route is anything but dull. For the most part the road is steep (8–10%), but there are also several easier sections of about one kilometre each, namely the beginning and the end of the climb, a section roughly halfway up, and another after about three quarters of the distance. Also nice: during this ascent we encountered many other road cyclists.
