The climb from Artemare to the Col de Richemond is quite long (20.5 kilometers) and there are 789 meters of altitude between start and finish. The average gradient is therefore 3.8%, which is not really terrifying. The hardest are the first 4 kilometers ending at Champagne-en-Valromey. These include the steepest two kilometers of the ride (8.2%). After Champagne, the ascent is characterised by wide views over the Valromey and on the mountains further south, and in the last 6 kilometers of the ride, past Sothonod, by a charming landscape of meadows, forests and rolling hills. The pass (1036 meters) is reached about one and a half kilometers past the highest point (1055 meters).
