The ascent of the northern side of the Col d'Izoard is certainly suitable for race cyclists. There is not much motorised traffic, road conditions are generally excellent and the scenery is nice, though not as spectacular as on the other side of the pass. Unfortunately, the Col d'Izoard seems to be popular among motorcyclists. The climb starts at a round-about just south of the centre of Briançon. During the first 11.5 kilometers the slope is variable but never exceeds 7%. Climbing becomes more serious after the hamlet of le Laus. From there to the pass the road is moderately steep (mostly 7-9%). A forest skirts the road until shortly before the col.
