This climb starts in Kappel, a village east of Freiburg, and follows the valley of the Reichenbach all the way to the end of the climb. This valley runs from north to south without significant bends. It is easy to describe the profile of the ascent as the road becomes steadily steeper. The ride starts with a slope at 3%, and after 3.5 kilometres of biking, at the last houses of the village, the gradient has increased to 7%. Two kilometres further on, the road splits, and we take the left-hand branch. If the gradient before the junction was 10%, it becomes even steeper afterwards (13%), while the road surface is excellent (as of 2025). A little more than half a kilometre after the road splitting, the gradient increases once again (14–15%), while the condition of the road surface becomes downright miserable. Climbing is very hard here. At te next junction the ordeal comes to an end. This is where the entrance used to be to one of the adits (Leopold-Stollen) of the Schauinsland mine.
