The climb of the northern side of the Ballon d'Alsace starting from St-Maurice-sur-Moselle is easy to describe. It is a one-gear-is-enough ascent. If you indeed have only a single gear, it should be the one you need for a slope of 7%. Other aspects of the tour tend to be monotonous as well. Most of the climbing takes place on a broad road in a dense forest, allowing no views. The exception is the stretch near la Jumenterie, a little more than a kilometer before the top, where the landscape is open.
