The climb from Poschiavo to the Forcola di Livigno is the twin brother of the ascent to the Berninapass from the south. Both climbs are almost equally hard. During the first fourteen kilometers the route of both ascents runs along the same wide and busy road. The ride begins at the bridge across the brook on the north side of Poschiavo. After two easy kilometers (4-5%) the real ascent begins at the end of San Carlo. On the next 12 kilometers the slope measures almost constantly 7-9%. A short distance to relax lies around La Rösa (at an altitude of 1871 meters). At the elevation of 2054 meters the two ascents go their own ways. Turn to the right for the Forcola di Livigno. The remaining four kilometers are the most beautiful of the whole trip. The road leads in an almost straight line to the pass through a narrow, steep and barren valley. The first one and a half kilometers are easy but after crossing the stream climbing becomes serious. The steepest kilometer of the ascent (10.9%) is found just before, in and after a turn to the left. Too bad that even here there is so much traffic due to all those tourists that head for duty-free Livigno to make their purchases.
