I would not really recommend this climb to the Passo Campo Carlo Magno from the village of Dimaro in the Val di Sole. There is an unpleasant amount of traffic on the road, which is so wide that many drivers think there is enough space for two cars and a cyclist side by side. However, that fits only just. When I was overtaken by a truck in a blind curve, there wasn't enough space left for me, so I had to drop to the right. Did the truck driver anticipate that I would fall into the soft grass? Cycling is not without danger, especially in Italy. The Passo Campo Carlo Magno (in English: the pass of Charlemagne's field) indeed owes its name to Charlemagne, who supposedly crossed this pass in the year 800 on the way to Rome to be crowned there to Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He probably didn't do it on a bike. The climb consists of two parts. The first part, 7 kilometers long, starts in Dimaro and leads with a large number of curves and hairpin bends quite steeply (largely 8%) uphill to the ski resort of Folgarida. After that, there are still eight kilometers left for the second part, which with a gradient of chiefly 4-6% is easier than the first part. On the left the Brenta Dolomites appear, one of the groups of the Dolomites, which are among the most beautiful parts of the Italian Alps. The best view of this mountain range is from the pass.
