La Savonne is nothing more than a collection of some stone huts where the asphalt ends. The ride to la Savonne is off the beaten track of tourism, which is so characteristic of the Haut Tarentaise, the region around Bourg-St.Maurice with all its winter sports resorts. The valleys and villages along the road of this ascent have yet hardly been discovered by tourism. So there is little traffic here. The ride is a big pleasure for the real climber because the road is narrow and steep, sometimes very steep. The section with hairpin bends just past La Crot, which starts after about five kilometers of cycling, currently (2019) contains the second steepest kilometer in the French Alps on this website (13.1%). The same applies to the average gradient (9.3%). The first one and a half kilometers of the trip lead from Ste-Foy-Tarentaise to La Masure. In the latter village, turn right towards La Sassière and from here always follow the asphalt to the finish. In addition to the already mentioned steep kilometer after La Crot, the road is also very steep on the straight in La Crot itself with a 250 meter section of 14%. The last kilometer of the climb is the most scenic because the surrounding mountains are more visible here. The slope is somewhat more moderate in this final part (7-8%).
